The San Jose State baseball program will be sending infielders Ruben Ibarra and Troy Viola to the College Summer Baseball Invitational this June. Both Spartans were recently selected by Mountain West Conference Head Coaches as All-Conference players.
After redshirting during his 2019 season, Ibarra returned to the diamond in a big way during the shortened 2020 campaign. Ibarra finished the season hitting .344 with three home runs, 21 hits and eight RBI while starting all 17 games for the Spartans. Ruben knocked in his first career home run in the opener vs. Santa Clara and he then hit homers against USF and at Cal. The Watsonville, California native had an illustrious prep career. Ibarra would earn All-League honors on his way to leading the league in home runs every year. He finished his time at St. Francis High School as the All-Time leader in home runs. “This is such an awesome opportunity, I’m honored to be invited”, said Ibarra. “I’m thrilled to be able to play ball and compete!”
Joining Ruben at the CSBI is teammate Troy Viola. The senior third baseman put together a solid 17 games during the 2020 shortened season. Starting every game at third-base and committing zero errors, he also tallied 19 hits including 5 doubled and nine RBI. The all-conference player led the team with 53 starts in 2019 all at third-base. He had 51 hits and 27 RBI for the Spartans. Before arriving at San Jose State, the Bend, Oregon native spent two seasons at Glendale Community College. During his sophomore season he won the Golden Glove award while hitting .306 with nine home runs and 38 RBI. “I’m excited to get to play the game I love, especially during these times”, said Viola. “I’m very appreciative of this opportunity.”
